Lula's Mexican Cafe, located at 115 E Travis St #104 in San Antonio, TX, is a local favorite for those looking to experience authentic Tex-Mex flavors. This cozy spot stands out for its famous "puffy taco," a signature dish that consists of a fried, puffy tortilla filled with your choice of beef or chicken, topped with guacamole, yellow cheese, shredded lettuce, and tomato. The iced tea served here is also a standout, offering generous portions that add to the overall value of the meal.

While the puffy tacos are a signature dish, it's important to note that they can get a bit greasy, so it's advisable to enjoy them right away to avoid sogginess. The refried beans are praised for their great consistency, though some diners have suggested adding a bit more seasoning to enhance the flavor further.

Lula's Mexican Cafe Reviews
Staff is friendly and accommodating and the wall decor is beautiful. I had the lunch platter w/ one chicken and beef puffy taco. Puffy taco - not bad, however, as a prior review mentioned, they get very soggy quickly. Also, the only flavor was found way at the bottom of the taco in the meat itself. Refried beans- great consistency, could use a bit more flavor. Overall, I recommend a visit! Quick, friendly service
It's not glamorous but Lula's is warm and inviting. Right across from the Embassy Suite on Soledad and Travis, Lulas is a good quick spot to grab some Mexican food. The place is bustling and a great spot to get a variety of dishes. All the specials are delicious. The servers are kind and welcoming! Ultimately, Lula's is a quick, local, and inexpensive spot to get some better than decent Mexican food!
So I was planning to eat somewhere else and they were closed on Mondays. In a quick dice toss, I decided to go to Lulu's. Now I am on a plane to Vegas because that was the best roll I've ever had and I better go to a craps table, quick!! The place was empty, but I arrived super early so I'm sure I got there at a great time to go they things pretty quick. At 11am, no one was around. I'm sure that will change as lunch gets closer. They first dropped off a small basket of chips and salsa. Never seen a single size before, but it was PERFECT. And the chips were astoundingly good. The salsa was more of a hot sauce, but with those chips, anything would be good. Being in the hometown of the Puffy Taco, I decided to go with the chicken variety. WOW that was good. Piping hot. Fresh. Delicious. Oh, wow I enjoyed it. The shredded chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned with fresh shredded lettuce and wonderful quacamole. So glad the first spot was closed. The beans were good and a bit spicy. The rice was slightly better. But the standouts were definitely the two puffy tacos. Pro-Tip: the Puffy tacos were a bit greasy. So if you get them to go, you won't have the same experience because they are likely to get soggy.
This place is amazing. I parked across the street and as soon as I got out of my car I could smell wonderful aromas. We were greeted and seated by a friendly woman and young man. I noticed a woman in the kitchen. A true small family business. I always support small businesses. I had been in San Antonio for a couple days and I kept attempting to go to puffy taco places and was unsuccessful. I saw it on their menu that's what drew me to this place. It was around 8:30 in the morning. I was getting ready to order my puffy tacos and was told they were not available they were only serving breakfast. No problem I was eyeing their Chilaquiles too! My daughter ordered the juevos Mexicanos and we decided to get a small stack of their pancakes with cinnamon and vanilla. While we were waiting for our breakfast we asked for some chips and salsa and they happily accommodated us. The chips were just the right texture and thickness and the salsa had just enough kick to it, but not overpowering. It reminded me of a salsa from one of my favorite restaurants in California. The food was amazing our breakfast came with a side of beans and a tortilla warmer full of warm homemade flour tortillas. These beans are some of the best refried beans I've had in my life... I probably should've ordered a cup to go to eat them on the airplane ride home. The homemade tortillas had just a tad of char on them. THE BEST!!! The service was outstanding the woman and young man were very attentive. When I left I went to tell them how impressed I was with the food and service... Come to find out Lula herself was waiting on us, along with her son. This place as a little bit off the beaten path but it is definitely worth it. Lula is a sweetheart. She feels like family I really just wanted to give her a hug.
Lula's is great if you wanna try the famous "puffy taco" of Texas. It's a fried, puffy tortilla with choice of beef or chicken with guac, yellow cheese, shredded lettuce and tomato. I preferred the beef over chicken and the rice + beans were also really good. The drinks (iced tea) was huge! You can get a to go cup for 50 cents more. Service was great. My only critique is that puffy tacos in general are a bit greasy, so more of an FYI. Overall I would definitely be back when in town.
